Town Bemba

Town Bemba, also known as Broken Bemba, is a Bemba-based pidgin and creole, or perhaps a koine, spoken among migrant populations in central Zambia. It developed in the mines and mining towns, where it replaced the earlier, and foreign, Fanagalo. Although there is some grammatical simplification, there is relatively little restructuring compared to standard Bemba, and because of this some have objected to it being called a pidgin (and now a creole); however, this may be because the native languages of the people who speak it are all closely related to Bemba.〔Kees Versteegh, 2009, "Non-Indo-European Pidgins and Creoles", in Kouwenberg & Singler, eds., ''The Handbook of Pidgin and Creole Studies''〕
